Trump to Walmart: “I Love Free Enterprise — Just Do It My Way”
WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump spent Saturday reminding Americans he loves the free market—seconds before telling Walmart exactly how to run its business.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump ordered the retail giant to absorb the costs of his own tariffs and keep prices flat, declaring that “valued shoppers” shouldn’t pay for “China’s crimes.”
“Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year,” Trump wrote. “They should EAT THE TARIFFS and not charge beautiful customers A SINGLE CENT MORE!”
The demand stands in sharp contrast to Trump’s longtime rhetoric against government interference in the marketplace, vowing to let businesses “run themselves.” On Saturday, however, Trump essentially told America’s largest retailer to operate like a state-run utility.
Walmart executives have warned that prices for everyday items—from fruit to car seats—are likely to rise. Economic analysts agree, noting that tariffs are paid by U.S. companies and consumers, not China. Trump, however, doubled down.
“If Walmart wants to raise prices, they’re ANTI-AMERICAN,” he posted, “and customers won’t forget!!!”
